In a nutshell: A ripe, juicy and easy drinking French Syrah.
The lowdown: Jean-Luc Colombo has vineyards both in the northern Rhône and down south near Marseille and this very approachable 100% Syrah is made using fruit from each location. Not having been aged in oak this wine emphasises the bright primary fruit flavours that young Syrah vines can produce. On the nose there's a touch of violets and aromas of raspberries and wild strawberries which follow nicely on to the palate giving a nice fresh feel to it. There's just a hint of gentle tannins, but overall it has a very welcoming soft character.
When to drink: A very versatile Rhône valley red, that'll pair well with a wide range of dishes, or just drunk all by itself.
Suitable for Vegans
Vins Jean-Luc Colombo
Jean-Luc Colombo is a relatively young company by French wine standards. With family origins in Marseille, Jean-Luc moved in 1982, with his wife Anne, to Cornas in the heart of the Rhône Valley, to set up a pharmacy and oenology lab. Four years later he bought his first vineyard - Les Ruchets - and celebrated his first vintage in 1987. His business went from strength-to strength and in 1993 Anne and Jean-Luc sold their pharmacy to focus on the wine business, investing in more vineyards and a house on the Cornas hillsides, as well as working as a negociant in this famous region.
As well as owning vineyards in the Cornas area they've also added holdings close to their origins on the Mediterranean coast near Marseille. Their winery, offices, bottling line and oenology laboratory are situated in the centre of Cornas. They are renowned for their great wines from the northern and southern Rhône and the Mediterranean region, and now export to over fifty countries.
