Description
In a nutshell:
A dark and full bodied 'Super Tuscan' from one of the leading estates.
The lowdown:
Ornellaia were one of the pioneers of the, now legendary 'Super Tuscans', and Le Serre Nuove is their silky second wine. It's from the same vineyards as the main wine, but with grapes from slightly younger vines. It's a mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend, with a bit of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and has been aged for 15 months in oak. The wine has wonderfully ripe red fruits and is rich and very well rounded with sleek velvety, tongue coating, tannins.
The Producer:
Founded in 1981 the Ornellaia estate in the fashionable Bolgheri wine region of Tuscany is, alongside the likes of Sassicaia, one of the pioneers of 'Super Tuscan' wines and one its iconic producers. In contrast to Chianti wines which are based on the indigenous Sangiovese grape, 'Super Tuscans' generally revolve around Bordeaux varieties and winemaking styles. Ornellaia was founded by Lodovico Antinori who deliberately planted Bordeaux varieties. From the first vintage release in 1985 the wines were an immediate success and were key in establishing the style. Over the years the estate has changed ownership on a number of occasions and is currently part of the Frescobaldi stable. The wines themselves continue to be held in the highest esteem and command commensurate prices in the market.
When to drink:
Full and powerful yet graceful and elegant it easily lives up to its revered reputation and has plenty of ageing capacity.
