Description
In a nutshell:
A vibrant red bursting with hedgerow berries and subtle spice, all framed by a refreshing, coastal breeze - that's the essence of this delightful New Zealand Pinot Noir.
The lowdown:
Imagine a bicycle ride through a rose garden on a crisp spring morning. That's the delightful dance of red fruit on the nose of this New Zealand Pinot Noir. Forget the weighty reds you might expect, this one's all about charming lightness. Crafted by a Chardonnay specialist with a twinkle in their eye, it's made with hand-picked grapes and a whisper of oak, resulting in a silky smooth texture that glides across the palate. Think of it as a summer afternoon in a glass - refreshing, eminently drinkable, and with a touch of unexpected charm.
The Producer:
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
When to drink:
This vibrant, plummy red is the sort you'll want beside you when roast chicken, a mushroom risotto, or a plate of grilled lamb chops are on the menu.
