Kumeu Village Chardonnay 2024
A fresh, finely balanced Chardonnay from Kumeu River that reflects their Burgundian-inspired style.
The Lowdown
Kumeu River made their name showing how well New Zealand can do Chardonnay, and this, their entry-level, is a good example of their approach. The fruit now comes mostly from Hawke's Bay, but the winemaking stays true to their roots - wild fermentation, time on lees and a gentle hand with French oak. It tastes clean and bright, with ripe citrus, peach and a trace of hazelnut. There's enough weight to feel complete, yet it stays focused and crisp from start to finish.
The Occasion
A versatile white with a splash of sunshine, perfect for a simple roast chicken or a pan-fried piece of salmon.
The Producer
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
