Description
In a nutshell:
From Hawkes Bay, this is a mid-weight, classy Chardonnay with crisp citrus, subtle oak, and a clean, mineral finish.
The lowdown:
Rays Road is Kumeu's new vineyard in Hawkes Bay, and the wines from here are already more than holding their own alongside their more established Auckland sites. Mellow yet focused, it's all about lemon and lime zest, a touch of pepper, juicy apricot, and a delicate nuttiness. The light, fine tannins and opulent fruit make it beautifully inviting right from the start. The Brajkovich family's winemaking expertise continues to work wonders - their magic touch extending seamlessly to this corner of New Zealand.
The Producer:
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
When to drink:
Brilliant with grilled sea bass or chicken with tarragon sauce - the citrus and nutty notes cut through rich flavours effortlessly. A deeply satisfying wine for convivial occasions.
