Description
In a nutshell:
A Prestisge cuvée Champagne who's reputation quite simply speaks for itself.
The lowdown:
While they do make other wines Krug Grande Cuvée is the Champagne that's made them famous and is a byword for luxury it all its forms. Somewhat unusually for a Champagne in this price bracket it's non-vintage and is made up of wines from around ten or more different years. All Krug's wines are fermented in small oak barrels which allows it to develop the supremely rich and complex character they're known for. Each year a new edition is brought out in which one particular year's wines make up the core of the blend. It has a quite intoxicating mix of nutty, spiced apple aromas and creamy vanilla which follow onto the palate along with fine buttery and brioche notes. And at the finish there's a final flourish of freshness as it signs off in style.
The Producer:
Krug was established in Reims in 1843, by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy. Having understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. It was paying close attention to the vineyard's character, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, as well as building an extensive library of reserve wines from many different years allowed Joseph Krug to fulfil his dream.
When to drink:
A celebratory and impressive aperitif par excellence.
Suitable for Vegans
