Description
In a nutshell:
An unctuously sweet, complex South African fortified wine, layered with rich dried fruit, honeyed spice, and a lingering, velvety finish.
The lowdown:
As sweet wines go, this is definitely towards the richer end of the scale. The way it's made is by fermentation being halted with pure grape spirit which retains plenty of natural sugar, before ageing in oak adds depth and refinement. Candied orange, dried apricot, and a touch of nuttiness and spice lift the nose, while the palate is unctuously rich, smooth, and deeply textured - sweet but never cloying. Pure indulgence, bold, complex, and satisfyingly sweet, with perfect balance from first sip to last.
The Producer:
Klein Zalze, nestled in the heart of the Cape Winelands, was revitalised when Kobus Basson purchased the estate in 1996. Although winemaking has been a part of this land since 1695, it's the recent investment and methodical approach that have catapulted Klein Zalze to prominence. In just 20 years, it has become one of the most awarded estates in Stellenbosch. Their wines are a true reflection of the region's terroir, showcasing a perfect blend of tradition and modern winemaking techniques.
When to drink:
Crème brûlée, panna cotta, or anything rich and creamy is a great match - the sweetness and spice wrap around them beautifully. Also handy with mature cheeses, adding a lovely contrast of fruit and nuttiness.
