In a Nutshell:
German Pinot Noir elegance, with red cherry, earthy and savoury notes wrapped in silky tannins.
The Lowdown:
The Kaiserstuhl's warm climate and volcanic soils make for natural Pinot Noir territory, and suit Johner's Burgundian approach very well which here is shown off to a tee. Red cherry and wild strawberry fruit mixes with earthy forest floor, dried leaves and a slight savoury edge. 12 months in used barriques adds a subtle smoke and spice on top. Fine-grained and silky tannins coupled with a fresh acidity maintain balance while it finishes languid and refined. Elegance with depth - exactly what Johner set out to achieve.
The Producer:
While Karl Heinz Johner's first experience of winemaking came in England, his passion became Burgundian-style wines which he wanted to start making in his native land. He settled on the Kaiserstuhl - Germany's 'home of the Pinots' - on the eastern bank of the Rhine as the ideal spot. Here the estate has around 20 hectares of vines and is considered one of the area's leading small producers, with their approach of focusing on structure and elegance, building wines with depth and complexity. These days the estate is run by Karl's son Patrick who has moved to organic viticulture, whilst Karl himself looks after their other estate in New Zealand's Wairarapa - another region famed for top-class Pinot Noir.
When to Drink:
Both good on its own or with food - a proper all-rounder. Pairs nicely with roast chicken, duck or game. Drinking well now but has the structure to go another five years if you fancy cellaring it.
