Description
In a nutshell:
Dry and citrussy with an elegant mineral edge, this is a bright, focused Hungarian white that's all about precision, freshness and a quiet charm.
The lowdown:
Lively, dry and sharply focused, this is Furmint showing its fresher side. Hungary's signature grape delivers zesty green apple and grapefruit, with a flinty, mineral edge and a clean, refreshing finish. A short period in stainless steel keeps everything taut and well defined, letting the fruit and acidity shine. There's a touch of Chablis-like steeliness, but it stands firmly on its own - bright, citrussy and full of character and clarity that calls for attention.
The Producer:
The Kardos family have owned vineyards in the Tokaj region for centuries, but it was only in the 1990's, with the end of Soviet domination, that they were to build a winery and go about building a reputation for themselves. Their vines sit in and around the crazy sounding village of Mád - long seen as Tokaj's most prestigious area. At first, they were a bit of a boutique operation, but when Gábor Kardos Jnr came onboard in 2008 things were put on a more serious footing. And more importantly, quality of output became the focus of things. They produce both the famous dessert wines of the area and delicious dry wines. Everything is made to meticulous standards and theyre an outfit to take note of.
When to drink:
It's difficult to go wrong with this really versatile white. It's great by itself or pair with seafood and poultry dishes.
