Kahlua
A dark and rich coffee and rum liqueur originating from Mexico.
The Lowdown
Kahlua is the biggest selling and probably best known coffee liqueur in the world. It's made from white rum that's blended with ground Arabica coffee beans with which vanilla and caramel are added before it's left to rest for eight weeks before bottling. It's got aromas of dark chocolate and vanilla which is followed by the unmistakable hit of strong, sweet coffee on the tongue. It's an essential part of a White Russian, or Espresso Martini to name a few, but also try it poured over ice cream.
The Producer
Kahlúa originates in the Mexican state of Veracruz and was created by Pedro Domecq there in 1936. The name Kahlúa means 'house of the Acolhua people' in the local Nahuatl language spoken in this part of Mexico before the Spanish Conquistadors arrived. It quickly gained popularity finding its way to the USA before World War II and much further afield shortly thereafter.
