Description
In a nutshell:
A rewarding Stellenbosch Shiraz with balanced acidity.
The lowdown:
Although matured in a mix of French and American oak drunk cool at a traditional cellar temperature of 12-14 degrees, rather than chilled, this wine has lovely characteristics that remind you of a Rhone Valley Syrah. There are dark fruit flavours displaying dark cherry, raspberry and blueberry with hints of violets, white pepper and dusty savoury, smoky spice adding complexity. The tannins are silky and well integrated, the body is full, but again thanks to the acidity and balance there is a freshness. Drinking well now.
The Producer:
Journey's End Vineyard is a picturesque Stellenbosch wine farm surrounded by the beautiful Schapenberg hills. Since 1995 it's belonged to the Gabb Family, originally from Shropshire in the UK, who, from small beginnings, have built a highly respected estate. The family's aim is to create top-quality wines which, using minimal intervention techniques, remain true to their terroir and show a unique expression of it. And the fact that their wines are regular award winners is a good indication of the standards they maintain.
When to drink:
Syrah traditionally accompanies lamb dishes very well, from a classic roast lamb joint to slow cooked Moroccan lamb tagine.
