Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth Stellenbosch red with blackcurrant, plum, and a hint of spice, all rounded off with velvety tannins and a cosy finish.
The lowdown:
This is what's known as a 'Bordeaux Blend' - the same mix of grapes as you'd find along the Gironde. Here it's Cabernet Sauvignon leading the charge, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. A 14-month stint in used French oak barrels softens things up without drowning the fruit in woodiness. On the nose, it's all blackcurrant, ripe cherries, and a hint of spice, while the palate brings juicy plums, more blackcurrant, and a touch of savoury spice and dried herbs. Fresh, bright, and designed for drinking now, it's an easy-going red that's easy to enjoy.
The Producer:
Tucked away In Stellenbosch's Schapenberg hills, Journey's End Vineyards have a view that would make even the most jaded traveller pause. It's not just a pretty spot though - this part of the world is tailor-made for growing grapes. Owned by the Gabb family since 1995, originally from Shropshire in the UK, they've grown from modest beginnings into a highly respected estate. Their philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: minimal intervention, maximum expression of the terroir. The results are wines that speak for themselves - and the steady stream of awards they get suggests they've struck the right balance between craft and nature.
When to drink:
A cracking weekday red that's happy alongside anything from bangers to spag bol - no fuss, just easy drinking.
