Idaia Vidiano, Crete 2023
Delicately aromatic and full of bright stone fruit, this fresh, lively white from Crete has a lovely lift of acidity that keeps it beautifully crisp and moreish.
The Lowdown
A native Cretan grape variety, Vidiano is a bit of rarity but is starting to build a bit of a profile - and this one is a good example of why that is. Made by Vasilis Laderos and Kalliopi Volitaki at their small winery, it's fermented and aged in stainless steel for maximum freshness. There's ripe pear, melon and a flicker of banana on show, lifted by a refreshing streak of acidity. The texture is firm with a light mineral edge, while a gentle herbal fragrance adds another layer to what is a generously flavoured, beautifully balanced white.
The Occasion
With its bright, generous personality, it's spot-on with classic Mediterranean dishes like grilled octopus, lemony chicken souvlaki, fresh seafood pasta or a simple salad of goat's cheese and herbs.
The Producer
Sitting in the heart of Crete, the Idaia Winery is a charming boutique operation in the village of Venerato. Founded in 2000 by husband-and-wife duo Vassilis Laderos and Kalliopi Volitaki, Idaia’s focus is firmly on the island's native grape varieties and rich winemaking traditions. With around 30 hectares of organically farmed vines, the couple is dedicated to sustainable practices. They also work closely with small growers in the Dafnes area, ensuring their wines truly capture the essence of Crete. Their approach to their craft makes them a great standard bearer for Cretan wines as a whole.
