Description
In a nutshell:
A robust red from the northern Rhône, this is all brooding blackberry fruit with a hint of liquorice that lingers like a magician's afterthought. Not for the faint of heart, but undeniably intriguing.
The lowdown:
Ah, a 2017 Hermitage. Now that's a wine that hints at something serious. A swirl of the glass reveals a symphony of red fruits - raspberries, just blushing with ripeness, mingle with a touch of liquorice. Unexpected, yes, but utterly delightful. The tannins? They're whisper-light, a gentle summer breeze caressing the palate before leading to a finish that speaks of sun-drenched slopes. This gem comes from the miniscule Hermitage appellation in the northern Rhône. Here, Syrah reigns supreme, and M. Chapoutier is a dab hand at coaxing the best out of it. Destemmed grapes dance in concrete tanks before a stint in oak, picking up a touch of spice and complexity along the way. The result? Elegance in a glass. Round, captivating, and utterly finessed, this Hermitage is a masterclass in Syrah.
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to drink:
This deeply savoury Syrah demands a special occasion; think grand dinners with game and lavish sauces - ready to drink now but will evolve gloriously until 2030.
