Description
In a nutshell:
A whiff of this biodynamic white whispers luxury, the sort of thing one might uncork to impress a sceptical aunt from Burgundy.
The lowdown:
This 2020 Hermitage Blanc from Chapoutier is a delightful surprise. Don't be fooled by the demure "white Hermitage" it packs a complex punch. Quince and acacia mingling with a hint of ginger, all woven through with a luscious richness of honey and ripe stone fruits. A touch of walnut adds a dry counterpoint, keeping things interesting. The secret lies in the meticulous details. Made entirely from Marsanne, a grape known for its finesse, the grapes hail from three esteemed Chapoutier vineyards. Organic and biodynamic practices nurture the fruit, and fermentation is a thoughtful mix of oak and stainless steel. The result? A textural delight - full-bodied yet balanced, with a long, clean finish that promises further evolution in the coming years. A superb example of what Hermitage Blanc can achieve.
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to drink:
Savour this complex, opulent white with lobster, poultry in creamy sauces, or piquant cheeses - ready now but truly blossoming from 2025 onwards.
