Description
In a nutshell:
A luxuriously rich, spicy and complex XO Cognac from one of the famous houses.
The lowdown:
Hennessy where the first to coin the term XO for a Cognac that had been aged for a much longer time than usual and the initial bottlings where only for family and friends. Happily now more widely available their XO is made from over 100 different eaux-de-vie from across the Grande and Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fin Bois vineyard areas. It's got rich and fruity aromas followed by dark chocolate and ruch dried fruits and soft spices on the palate. At the finish there's a whole medley of dark fruits and silky vanilla feel that rounds it off wonderfully.
The Producer:
One of the big names of Cognac Hennessys story starts with Irishman Richard Hennessy who, after serving as a solider in the French army under Louis XV settled in the Cognac region and began distilling in the late 1700s. Riding a boom in the popularity of Cognac he quickly becoming successful and by the mid-1800s Hennessy's Cognacs were being exported throughout the world. Maison Hennessy itself stands on the banks of the Charente River in the town of Cognac where their spirits are still made and aged in their extensive cellars.
