Description
In a nutshell:
An elegant and restrained English Blanc de Blancs from the highly regarded Gusbourne Estate.
The lowdown:
Blanc de Blancs are made entirely from Chardonnay and Gusbourne's expression is one that typifies the elegance, finesse and crisp minerality that the best example display. The fruit comes from selected parcels at their vineyards in Appledore, Kent and Goodwood in West Sussex. While most of it is fermented in stainless steel a small proportion was fermented in old oak barrels to add an extra cpmplexity. It was then aged on its lees for a minimum of 42 months. It has a mousse which is supremely delicate with classic aromas of green apple, citrus, mineral notes with hints of buttered toast and tarte tatin. The understated, but subtly creamy body leads onto a long, cleanly citrus and mineral influenced finish.
The Producer:
South African Andrew Weeber is the person behind Gusbourne Estate. In 2004 he started a vineyard here, in Appledore Kent, from which to produce English Sparkling Wine and the first wines followed in 2010. Their vineyards, south facing on the low slopes of the Kentish escarpment, are planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. From the outset the vision was to establish Gusbourne as one of the best English producers and to that end substantial investment was made and a talented team of staff assembled. These days their reputation is such that their wines are found on the lists of many of the country's most prestigious restaurants which speaks volumes about their achievements in the last few years.
When to drink:
With the complexity and elegance of a great Blanc de Blancs this is a great accompaniment to seafood in general and wonderful with shucked oysters in particular.
