In a nutshell: An elegant and well balanced white from the northern Portuguese region of Dão.
The lowdown: This is a great introduction to Dão white wines and is made with a blend of local graoe varieties featuring mainly Encruzado and Malvasia Fina. It's light and elegant with aromas of pear, pineapple and citrus fruit balanced with a minerally, clean backbone of acidity.
When to drink: It's a good 'any occasion' white to drink as an aperitif and it also matches very well with rice, salads, and fish dishes.
The Quinta dos Carvalhais is a beautiful property near the village of Mangualde in the Dão region of northern Portugal with its vineyards dedicated to regional grape varieties. The estate combines extensive experience of traditional winemaking practices with the most up-to-date techniques, creating wines of great elegance and a unique personality. In total the estate extends to 105 hectares of which 50 are under vine and sit at an altitude of between 450 and 600 metres above sea level. Since 1988 the estate has been a part of the Sogrape Group, one of Portugal's biggest wine businesses. Today, winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida makes an increasingly impressive range of wines from the estate vineyards.
It has also been instrumental in defending the interests and living conditions of many small winegrowers who deliver their grapes there. In addition Quinta dos Carvalhais use grapes grown in their own vineyards to ensure the quality of the wines live up to the tradition and reputation of the Dão region.
