Gran Cerdo Tempranillo 2024

This is fresh, unoaked and fruit-forward Tempranillo and quite a contrast to the structured, bold and tannic versions that proliferate in the upper Ebro valley. This is a vivid, albeit unvarnished wine, bursting with cherry, plum and a hint of spice. It's supple, bright and full of personality and a natural expression of Tempranillo's fruit-driven side. The story behind how a pig's head stuffed with cash came to be on the label is intriguing - something to do with an independently minded winemaker rubbing up against reluctant bankers. But, we can be grateful for the outcome - an unpretentious, delicious wine that's great value too. We'd like to tell you where it comes from, but you'll just have to read between the lines.

Gonzalo Gonzalo Grijalba, born in Logroño, is the guy behind Gran Cerdo wines, and someone who does things his own way. And when it comes to his wines, that's no bad thing. The pig’s head on the labels, its mouth stuffed with cash, is his dig at the bankers who refused him a loan when he was starting out. Happily, overcoming all setbacks he's been up and running for a while now, following his passion for making delicious wines and is well established and respected. He sticks to biodynamic principles in his small vineyards but blends that with a modern approach. The result? Fantastic, natural wines that really stand out.
