Description
In a nutshell:
A small, 20cl size bottle of this admirable, soft and rounded aged tawny port.
The lowdown:
Lengthy ageing in wooden casks rather than in bottle is what makes a tawny lighter in both colour and body than other styles. And with this comes softer tannins and a silkier moutfeel. Graham's 10 year old tawny is a classic example. The colour is a rich, deep shade of tawny and on the nose it's full of complex, nutty aromas with hints of honey and fig while on the palate the fruit flavours are rich, mature and mellow and lead onto a long, luscious finish.
The Producer:
Established in 1820 in Oporto, W & J Graham is one of the Port trade's famous names and has long been synonymous with some of the greatest Vintage Ports. The Symington family acquired the company in 1970. At the heart of Graham's Port is the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley. The old winery was completely renovated in 2000 and is now equipped with three revolutionary robotic lagares that 'tread' the grapes. Alongside these are the ancient granite lagares where some of the harvest is still trodden by human foot. The neighbouring Quinta do Tua and Quinta das Lages in the Rio Torto valley are key vineyards for Graham's, as are the privately family owned Quintas of Vila Velha and Vale de Malhadas.
When to drink:
At its best slightly chilled and great served alongside apple pie.
