Description
In a nutshell:
Plush, spiced, and velvety, this LBV is packed with ripe dark fruit, warming spice, and a smooth, lingering finish.
The lowdown:
Smooth, rich, and effortlessly indulgent - if that's how you like your port, an LBV is the way to go. A few years in cask before bottling builds character and complexity, and Grahams LBV has plenty of that on show. Velvety and packed with juicy blackberries, ripe plums, and black cherry, it's layered with warming spice, dark chocolate, and a hint of liquorice. The tannins are smooth, the finish is long and plush, and the whole thing feels wonderfully polished - full of depth and richness.
The Producer:
Established in 1820 in Oporto, W & J Graham is one of the Port trade's famous names and has long been synonymous with some of the greatest Vintage Ports. The Symington family acquired the company in 1970. At the heart of Graham's Port is the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley. The old winery was completely renovated in 2000 and is now equipped with three revolutionary robotic lagares that 'tread' the grapes. Alongside these are the ancient granite lagares where some of the harvest is still trodden by human foot. The neighbouring Quinta do Tua and Quinta das Lages in the Rio Torto valley are key vineyards for Graham's, as are the privately family owned Quintas of Vila Velha and Vale de Malhadas.
When to drink:
Opulent, ripe, and full of character, this goes brilliantly with a rich, dark chocolate cake or a classic tarte aux poires, where its rich fruit and spice come into their own. For cheese, a mature cheddar adds depth, while a tangy goat's cheese brings a bold contrast.
