Description
Port
Tawny
ABV 20.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A deeply matured tawny with lifted aromatics, layered sweetness and the focus that only long cask ageing brings.
The Lowdown:
Few houses have the old-cask reserves Graham's does, and it shows in the way they approach tawnies of this age. Decades in seasoned casks have taken the colour to deep mahogany and pushed the aromatics towards walnut, citrus peel and polished wood. The palate is concentrated and smooth, with caramelised nuts, dried fig and a touch of warm, nutty depth. It's got the firm acidity combined with textured delicacy that older tawnies tend to acquire and maybe a slightly drier finish. Intriguing, multifaceted and quite a treat.
The Producer:
Established in 1820 in Oporto, W & J Graham is one of the Port trade's famous names and has long been synonymous with some of the greatest Vintage Ports. The Symington family acquired the company in 1970. At the heart of Graham's Port is the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley. The old winery was completely renovated in 2000 and is now equipped with three revolutionary robotic lagares that 'tread' the grapes. Alongside these are the ancient granite lagares where some of the harvest is still trodden by human foot. The neighbouring Quinta do Tua and Quinta das Lages in the Rio Torto valley are key vineyards for Graham's, as are the privately family owned Quintas of Vila Velha and Vale de Malhadas.
When to Drink:
Best after dinner with blue cheese, roasted nuts or dark chocolate, where its depth and acidity work naturally with richer flavours.
