Description
In a nutshell:
There's a bit of an old-school feel to this Languedoc Carignan - structured and spicy, with plenty of dark fruit and a touch of rustic charm.
The lowdown:
If you fancy trying out Carignan, one of the Languedoc's traditional varieties, old-vine - vieilles vignes - versions like this are the way to go. The lower yields which come with age mean more concentration, and it shows - rich and ripe, packed with black cherry and blackberry fruit. A short spell in oak adds a touch of spice and vanilla, bringing a bit of extra depth. The acidity keeps it fresh but never over the top - a common pitfall with Carignan - while silky tannins give it a smooth, balanced feel. Rustic yet refined, with plenty of character, this is old-vine Carignan showing exactly what it can do.
The Producer:
This is made by the Producteurs Reunis Cebazan, one of the forward-looking Languedoc co-operatives who do so much to make this region a reliable source of good quality wines that provide a lot of bang for their buck. They're based near Beziers in the heart of the the region's vineyard area.
When to drink:
Perfect with slow-cooked lamb shanks, beef stew, or grilled sausages, where its rich fruit and spice shine. An ideal food wine, it also works beautifully with roast pork or a hearty cassoulet.
Suitable for Vegans
