Furst Spatburgunder Tradition 2022
A pure and elegant, fruit forward German Pinot Noir from the Bavarian wine region of Franconia.
The Lowdown
Spätburgunder is simply Germany's name for Pinot Noir. Fürst are among the country's masters of it and here they show why: fragrant red-cherry and cranberry fruit, a flicker of spice and almond, and supple, velvety tannins on a medium body. Grown on Franken's red-sandstone slopes and aged in oak barrels with real finesse, it delivers the kind of elegance and balance you'd expect from good Côte-de-Beaune Burgundy - only at a keener price. Fürst's reputation among sommeliers and critics is stellar, and this is very much a serious Old-World Pinot Noir. Classy, precise and certainly playing in Burgundy's league.
The Occasion
Roast pork or, slightly pink lamb are winning food combinations here as would be hearty vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms and root vegetables.
The Producer
The Franconian village of Bürgstadt, where they've been rooted since 1638, is where you'll find Weingut Rudolph Fürst. The estate as we know it today owes much to Paul and Monika Fürst, who, in the 1970s and 1980s, built new facilities on the village outskirts and expanded the vineyards to over 20 hectares, largely planted with Spatburgunder, aka Pinot Noir. Paul and his son Sebastian are both celebrated winemakers, each honoured as German Winemaker of the Year. Together, they've built an enviable reputation for their wines, blending tradition and innovation with an effortlessly understated finesse.
