Description
In a nutshell:
Elegant, lightly structured sparkling rosé from Franciacorta - northern Italy's answer to Champagne.
The lowdown:
If you're after serious Italian sparkling with Champagne-level polish, Franciacorta is where to look - and this is a particularly classy example. Made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay using the traditional method, it spends 36 months on lees for subtle complexity. Expect fine bubbles, crisp red berries, blood orange and a touch of toasted brioche. There's brightness and lift, but also a gentle creaminess that gives it shape. Stylish, expressive and finely made, it's a wine that completely holds its own on the big stage.
The Producer:
Ferghettina is a stand-out example showing that Italian sparkling wine isn't just about Prosecco. Founded in 1991 by Roberto Gatti and very much a family-run affair, they specialise in Franciacorta, Italy's top sparkling wine. With over 200 hectares of vines, mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they create a range of styles from their base in Adro, between Milan and Brescia. Franciacorta from talented producers like Ferghettina really stands up to Champagne, both in quality and price. And if you're interested in exploring serious Italian bubbles, Ferghettina offers a journey well worth embarking on.
When to drink:
Spot on for aperitifs and any occasion that calls for a bit of sparkle. It's a great match for salmon, tuna tartare, or prosciutto - anything with a bit of richness or salt. The crisp acidity and fine mousse cut through the fat nicely, while the red fruit adds a bit of lift. Polished, poised, and with a touch more class.
Suitable for Vegans
