Description
In a nutshell:
An intense, vibrant and rich Valpolicella Ripasso from the Lake Garda region of northern Italy.
The lowdown:
Ripasso is quite a different animal to bright and breezy Valpolicella. It's has an extra dimension of richness obtained by a second fermentation on the skins of Amarone and it's a style of wine that's really grown in popularity over the last few years. It has elegant, ripe cherry aromas and a silky vanilla spiciness on the palate which it gains from 12 months spent in oak.
The Producer:
Vini Fabiano traces its history back to just before the first world war when, under founder Francesco Fabiano, they started out selling their wines from a shop in Venice. From here they met with a good degree of success and, over the next few decades, expanded gradually throughout the Veneto region and northwest Italy. By the late 1960s they'd established a substantial estate and winery in the town of Sona in between Verona and Lake Garda. Today the business is run by the Alessandro Fabiano, the fourth generation of the family, who has taken on the reins from his father Nicola. Over the years they've added various Veronese specialities to their portfolio along with prosecco and good quality regional varietals, but it's their widely admired flagship Amarones, and Valpolicellas which lead the way.
When to drink:
A more affordable alternative to a full on Amarone and is full of character and richness. Suits roasted red meats and full flavoured game dishes.
