The Lowdown
This pink-skinned grape, something of a niche variety even in its native Austria, can be a something of a challenge to grow, but the rewards are evident in good examples such as this. A hauntingly seductive and textural wine from the off, the nose gives an enticing blend of fresh herbs and ripe stone fruit, leading to a palate brimming with tropical notes, a gentle spice, and beautifully balanced acidity. Elegance and subtlety mark this out in a distinctive and delicious way.
The Occasion
Exceptionally versatile this pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes, especially those featuring pork, poultry, or seafood.
The Producer
Amid the rolling hills of Austria's Wagram region in the village of Ottenthal, Weingut Emil Bauer has been making wine since 1840. Five generations have tended these vines, each leaving their mark on the estate. Today, Matthias Bauer is the chief winemaker and brings a global perspective gained from working in vineyards around the world prior to returning to the family enterprise. Importantly, his focus on quality over quantity show through in every bottle and showcases the unique terroir of the Wagram region.
