The Lowdown:
El Cabrón Mezcal Joven captures the character of Oaxaca's mezcal tradition. Produced in Santa Ana del Río from 100% Espadín agave, the piñas are roasted in underground pits, crushed by tahona, fermented in wood and double-distilled in copper. The result is smoky yet finely balanced, with mineral salinity, citrus brightness and hints of roasted fruit and cocoa. A spirit that shows agave in its truest form, and a clear reminder theres far more to discover beyond Tequila.
The Producer:
El Cabrón isn't a distillery in the usual sense, but a movement founded by Ana Gomez and Chris Peel to draw attention to Mexico's small-scale agave growers and traditional distillers. It started when Gomez began sourcing rare agave distillates from Oaxaca, Zacatecas and Jalisco, seeking to get away from the big, anonymous brands. Peel joined, and together they set out to bottle spirits that are faithful to place and method - ancestral mezcal, Tequilan-style distillates beyond the strict Tequila DOC limits, responsibly farmed agave, and minimal intervention. Their aim: put the spotlight back on the people behind the spirit, not just the label.
