Description
In a nutshell:
Think pink - this South African skin-contact wine is all strawberry vibes with a bit of satisfying grip.
The lowdown:
This skin-contact Grenache Gris is a bit of a surprise it actually looks more like a rosé. A bit like popping a red sock in with your whites. But looks aside, it's seriously good: beautifully pale pink in colour, with clean, fresh aromas and a burst of fresh strawberries on the palate. There's a nice zesty finish too. Made in Paarl, South Africa, it was skin fermented naturally and matured in those cool ceramic egg things. A bit of a quirky one and there's not much of it around, but honestly, really delicious and worth grabbing a bottle.
The Producer:
Wildeberg Wines, nestled in South Africa's Franschhoek valley, thrive under the watchful eye of winemaker JD Rossouw. Here they craft their wines from both local vineyards and those further afield. As part of South Africa's Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) system, their practices are environmentally friendly, and their participation in the Cape's Old Vine Project highlights their commitment to preserving vines over 35 years old. JD also experiments with lesser-known varieties and cutting-edge techniques, showcased under their SKU (Strange Companjie Unlimited) label. They're good for a fresh and innovative take on things.
When to drink:
This savoury Grenache Gris is spot on for smoky pork chops, Jersey Royals, and a bit of asparagus.
Suitable for Vegans
