An elegant, refined and well balanced, organic dry German Riesling from the Rheinhessen.
The lowdown:
Since Jochen Dreissigacker took on this estate from his parents a few years ago things have been really shaken up and he's built an enviable reputation for this wines. The vineyards are low yielding and they use as little intervention as possible in the winery. For this, their Estate Dry Riesling, the grapes were hand harvested and underwent spontaneous fermentation using wild yeasts. While most of the wine was vinified in stainless steel, 10% did so in barrel. The result is a wine full of ripe fruit aromas of citrus, nectarine and apricot, paired with light spice notes. The palate is delightfully refreshing, with the elegant medium body very well balanced by a crisp acidity and mineral subtones.
The Producer:
Dreissigacker Wein's vineyards sit around the villages of Bechtheim and Westhofen in the Rheinhessen, of which just over half are planted with the classic Rhine variety, Riesling. Jochen Dreissigacker is the man in charge and everything he does organic, describing his transformation to organic viticulture as 'the artisan path to purity'. From 2019, he also started following biodynamic principles in order to create the optimal conditions for the grapes to thrive - an approach that he describes as 'a long-term investment in nature and wines'. He reduced the yields in the vineyard by creating a much healthier soil, which in turn was lower in vigour. 'The path to any truly great wine is to limit the number of grapes that are allowed to ripen,' says Jochen.
When to drink:
With a good balance of power and acidity this is really food friendly - all the way from straightforward pork chops to rich, spicy south east asian cuisine suits it to a tee.
