Finding any an alcohol free sparkling wine, or any alcohol free wine for that matter, that satisfyingly tastes like wine is hard, but here legendary German winery Dr Loosen has triumphed. Tasted blind it would be hard to tell if this was alcohol free or had a typically Mosel Valley-like sub-10% abv level. On the palate fresh and vibrant bubbles with flavours that are classically Riesling. Citrus and tropical fruit notes with subtle touches of petrol and exotic spice held together by really characteristic crisp acidity.
The Producer:
Dr Loosen, the estate behind the Dr. Lo range, is one of the big names in German wine - and for good reason. Based in the Mosel Valley, this family-run estate has been making Riesling for over 200 years, and under Ernst Loosen's watch since the late 80s, things have only got better. The steep, slate-covered slopes of their vineyards produce seriously classy fruit, and the wines are full of that trademark Mosel elegance and mineral bite. Tradition's still a big part of what they do, but there's plenty of forward thinking too - and the focus on quality and sustainability runs right through the range.
When to drink:
Spot on with prawn tempura, crab maki, or chilli-garlic clams - it's bright, gently fizzy, and good 'any-time' drinking, especially with fresh, salty, or slightly spicy shellfish.
