Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 2023
With a gentle off-dry finish, fine mineral line, bright citrus and juicy stone fruit, this Nahe Riesling is light and delicate.
The Lowdown
Kabinett is the lightest, most delicate style of German Riesling - low in alcohol, high in acidity, and with just a touch of natural sweetness. This single vineyard wine from Dönnhoff is a fine example. From the southeast-facing slopes of Leistenberg, where long, slow ripening preserves freshness, it's all bright citrus, juicy red apple, and ripe peach, underpinned by slatey minerality. A crisp, spicy acidity carries through to a long, textured finish with real finesse. Beautifully precise and perfectly balanced, it captures just why this style so appealing.
The Occasion
Drink now or over the next five years - its bright acidity and touch of sweetness make it a great match for sushi, Thai salads, or lightly spiced stir-fries, keeping everything fresh and beautifully balanced.
The Producer
The Dönnhoff estate is firmly established as one of the best producers in the beautiful Nahe Valley and can trace its roots back to the mid-1700s. They're based in the small town of Oberhausen in the heart of the region where they have around twenty hectares of vines mainly planted with Riesling. Under the guidance of Helmut Dönnhoff, winemaker from the early 1970s, the estate established its reputation as one of the finest in the region with admirers such as Hugh Johnson and Robert Parker. Helmut's son, Cornelius, is now at the helm and with the skill and passion he's clearly inherited the quality of the estate's output continues to impress.
