Donnhoff Dry Riesling 2023

For an appealing, approachable introduction to Nahe Riesling from one of Germany's top producers, you won't go wrong here. Grown on stony, weathered volcanic soils and matured in both stainless steel and large German oak barrels, it's fresh, elegant, and underpinned by a fine mineral backbone. Classic notes of lime and green apple shine through, balanced by well-judged acidity and a refined complexity. With a long, clean finish that lingers beautifully, this is a good example of what makes Nahe Riesling a bit special.

Makes a very decent aperitif indeed, and also shines with seafood or lemony pasta - the bright acidity and mineral backbone cutting through rich sauces while lifting delicate flavours beautifully.

The Dönnhoff estate is firmly established as one of the best producers in the beautiful Nahe Valley and can trace its roots back to the mid-1700s. They're based in the small town of Oberhausen in the heart of the region where they have around twenty hectares of vines mainly planted with Riesling. Under the guidance of Helmut Dönnhoff, winemaker from the early 1970s, the estate established its reputation as one of the finest in the region with admirers such as Hugh Johnson and Robert Parker. Helmut's son, Cornelius, is now at the helm and with the skill and passion he's clearly inherited the quality of the estate's output continues to impress.
