The Lowdown
For some people Retsina still carries a bit of baggage from an era of rough-hewn, resin-heavy wines. That's certainly not the case here. A marriage of old-vine Savatiano — Attica's signature grape — and local pine resin, added during fermentation, it has aromas of lemon peel, pine and dried rosemary with a faint leafy note. The palate is dry, brisk and neatly balanced, mixing citrus and subtle stone fruit with that savoury, resinous edge and a clean, lightly saline finish. Sherry lovers who enjoy the tangy, savoury side of Fino will find plenty to like here.
The Occasion
Serve well chilled with mezze- grilled octopus, olives, fried courgettes or anything garlicky and salty will do nicely. The herbal tang and dry finish cut through oil and match big flavours effortlessly.
The Producer
Papagiannakos is one of the leading wineries of Mesogia, the picturesque region east of Athens often considered its 'stockbroker belt' and the historic heart of Attica's wine production. Founded in 1919, it's now run by Vassilis Papagiannakos, continuing four generations of family winemaking. From around 30 hectares of vines, the estate grows native varieties including Savatiano — the region's heritage grape — alongside Malagouzia, Assyrtiko and Agiorgitiko, plus the more recently planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Their ambition and identity with the region show clearly in the authenticity of their wines.
