The Lowdown
Retsina still carries a bit of baggage, for some, from an era of rough, resin-heavy wines. That’s a shame, because this shows how well the style can turn out in the right hands. It’s a marriage of old-vine Savatiano and a precise touch of pine resin, giving aromas of lemon peel, pine and dried herbs with a faint leafy note. The palate is dry, brisk and neatly balanced, mixing citrus and subtle stone fruit with that savoury, resinous edge and a clean, lightly saline finish. Sherry lovers who enjoy the tangy, savoury side of Fino may find plenty to like here.
The Occasion
Serve well chilled with mezze- grilled octopus, olives, fried courgettes or anything garlicky and salty will do nicely. The herbal tang and dry finish cut through oil and match big flavours effortlessly.
The Producer
Domaine Papagiannakos sits in the heart of Attica, just east of Athens, where vine-covered hills meet the Aegean breeze. Founded in 1919, the estate is now run by Vassilis Papagiannakos, who brings fresh energy to this third-generation family winery. Old vines of Savatiano and Malagouzia thrive in the region’s dry, sunlit soils, producing wines full of clarity and character. Tradition runs deep here, but the approach is forward-looking—sustainable in the vineyard and modern in the cellar. A reflection of Attica's, past and present.
