Papagiannakos 'Kalogeri' Malagouzia 2025

Malagousia is Greece's aromatic grape variety and, as here, makes wines with good body and a character akin to Viognier with a fresher, herbal finish. By the early 1970s it had all but disappeared from cultivation, and were it not for a few far-sighted growers, it might have been lost altogether. Grown in vineyards around Papagiannakos' winery south east of Athens, this is silky on the palate, with ripe peach, orchard fruit and a hint of mandarin oil, all lifted by a bright citrus edge. A good example of a grape that's winning a fair few fans.

Best enjoyed young and fresh to get the best from the aromatics. Try it with lightly battered calamari, where its zesty acidity cuts through the richness beautifully.

Papagiannakos is one of the leading wineries of Mesogia, the picturesque region east of Athens often considered its 'stockbroker belt' and the historic heart of Attica's wine production. Founded in 1919, it's now run by Vassilis Papagiannakos, continuing four generations of family winemaking. From around 30 hectares of vines, the estate grows native varieties including Savatiano — the region's heritage grape — alongside Malagouzia, Assyrtiko and Agiorgitiko, plus the more recently planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Their ambition and identity with the region show clearly in the authenticity of their wines.
