Description
In a nutshell:
An unusual, but fragrant and very approachable southern Rhône red blend.
The lowdown:
Grown on a plot next to the River Ouvèze this is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and the little known Caladoc and is consequently classified as just 'Vin de France' rather than anything more prestigious. It's smooth and spicy with some robust dark fruit flavours and whilst quite full bodied it's very easy drinking with soft and elegant tannins. From the home of a highly regarded Gigondas producer this a really good value for money wine.
The Producer:
Domaine la Bouïssière in the heart of Southern Rhône's Gigondas appellation is run by brothers Thierry and Gilles Faravel and is one of the area's leading estates. The family has been farming their low-yielding 30-50 year old vines organically since the late 1980s, nine hectares of which are situated at the base of the famous Dentelles de Montmirail, making them some of the highest vineyards in Gigondas. This elevation permits a long growing season which adds an attractive elegance and freshness to the wines. They also have holdings in Beaumes de Venise and the Ventoux from which go to make the other wines of their portfolio and which are made with the same care and attention.
When to drink:
The perfect thing for when you want a good, juicy quaffing red. Great with things like pizza and pasta.
