Description
In a nutshell:
A 50/50 blend of native varieties from Lebanon, with dried fruit flavours, from the Bekaa Valley.
The lowdown:
With a rich golden colour and a nose filled with natural aromas of ripened grapes, apple skin, and a mix of herbs and spices this is a Levantine white full of character. On the palate, it's mineral and savoury, revealing notes of dried figs and fresh almonds on the finish. It's a blend of equal parts Merweh and Obeidi, sourced from low-yielding, high altitude, old vineyards in the Western Bekaa. Full of rich and concentrated flavours this has proper complexity and depth.
The Producer:
Domaine des Tourelles, founded in 1868 by Frenchman François-Eugène Brun, holds the title of the oldest winery in Lebanon. The Brun family maintained ownership until 2003, when it was passed to the Lebanese Issa and Issa el-Khoury families, who have since brought the estate into the 21st century. Their vineyards, situated in the prime locations of the Bekaa Valley, are organically farmed. In the winery, they adopt a minimal intervention philosophy, using natural yeasts for fermentation and avoiding fining or filtration, with minimal sulphur use. Not just the oldest, Domaine des Tourelles is also one of Lebanon's finest wineries.
When to drink:
White fish dishes, such as sea bream, would complement this wine well.
Suitable for Vegans
