Description
In a nutshell:
There's Bordeaux inspired lavish opulence in this big Bulgarian red.
The lowdown:
The proprietor of Bessa Valley, Count Stephan von Neipperg, boasts a bevy of esteemed Bordeaux Châteaux and the products of his Bulgarian estate are undoubtedly influenced by this. This blend, comprising roughly 50% Merlot, 25% Syrah, and a modicum of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, undergoes cool fermentation before spending roughly 12 months in French oak barrels. The bouquet is redolent of vanilla and menthol, with berry fruits in abundance. On the palate, dark fruits predominate, imparting flavours of raisins, liquorice, and sweet spices, along with rustic, gamey, and meaty notes. The wine boasts a well-rounded structure with tannins that are prominent yet harmoniously integrated.
The Producer:
Situated to the west of the ancient central Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, Bessa Valley Winery is owned by Count Stephan von Neipperg a noted vigneron who also has several prominent Bordeaux Châteaux such as Canon La Gaffelière and La Mondotte to his name. He chose this area to branch out in because he felt the combination of the region's clay-limestone soils, which have parallels to that of Saint Émilion, and the local climate gave the potential to produce wine of comparable quality to Bordeaux. By 2005 the winery had planted 140 Ha of vineyards - 55% of Merlot, with and equal amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Now that these vineyards have reached maturity the excellence of their output is plain to see.
When to drink:
Quite a robust and beefy wine that's made to drink with food. Beef, naturally, game dishes and strong hard cheese are what's called for here.
Suitable for Vegans
