Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
With a dry, savoury feel that nods towards Amontillado sherry, this is nutty, tangy and caramel-edged - five years in oak have added real depth.
The Lowdown:
Comparing this to sherry isn't really the right way to do it, but as a rough location point think of Amontillado and take things from there. Made mainly from Tinta Negra and aged for five years in oak, it's dry but rounded, with aromas of walnut, citrus peel and light toffee. The palate is brisk and nutty, showing roasted almond and caramel notes lifted by Madeira's natural acidity. The extra cask time adds warmth and polish, giving a balance of savoury depth and freshness that's distinctly its own.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Just slightly chilled it makes a perfect aperitif alongside nibbles like salted cashews or almonds.
