Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 37.5cl
In a Nutshell:
Deep golden brown in colour, this is a full bodied, soft and rich Madeira.
The Lowdown:
Made predominantly from Tinta Negra Mole grapes the fermenting juice is fortified before undergoing a maturation process unique to Madeira - the Estufa system. During a period of around 3 months the wine is gradually heated to over 40°C before being allowed to cool. After this it's aged for three years in oak before bottling. Richly full bodied and warmly soft in texture it's full of ripe notes of toffee, coffee, molasses, and chocolate.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Full bodied, yet welcomingly soft it signs of with a long sweet finish. Works well as an after dinner drink with sweet, ripe fruits.
