Description
Madeira
ABV 19.0% - 37.5cl
In a Nutshell:
Golden-tawny and nutty with gentle sweetness - think Amontillado in spirit, but with brighter acidity and a roasted, caramelised edge.
The Lowdown:
If you know Amontillado sherry - dry, nutty and tangy - this isn't far removed, just fuller and rounder in feel. Made mainly from Tinta Negra Mole and aged for three years in oak after the traditional Estufa process, where the wine is gently heated to develop depth and mellow sweetness, it shows aromas of raisin, hazelnut and orange peel, with a smooth palate balancing toffee and caramel tones against fresh acidity. A gently warming, nutty fortified wine from one of Madeira's oldest family producers.
The Producer:
Founded in 1850 and still family-run, Pereira d'Oliveira is one of the great keepers of Madeira tradition. Step into their cellars in Funchal and it feels like time has barely moved on - dark old casks, heavy bottles and labels that look straight out of another century. They are one of the few houses to survive from the pre-phylloxera period and have maintained a stock of old and rare wines dating well back into the 1800s. While others have modernised, they've simply carried on doing what they've always done: maturing wines slowly in wood, bottling only when ready, and guarding one of the island's most extraordinary libraries of vintages. Less commercial than their peers, they remain custodians of Madeira's heritage and a touchstone for authenticity and age-worthy style.
When to Drink:
Best slightly chilled with hard cheese, roasted nuts or smoked fish. Also good alongside savoury tarts or mushroom dishes where its gentle sweetness adds contrast.
