CVNE Viña Real Gran Reserva, Rioja 2018
A full, classically styled Rioja Gran Reserva with ripe red and black fruit, coffee, spice and balsamic notes, silky yet firm tannins and a long, structured finish.
The Lowdown
Viña Real is a Gran Reserva in a traditional style, but with a bit more focus and shine than the real old-school examples, so you get clear fruit and savoury character rather than a wall of oak. Ripe red and black fruit sit alongside notes of cigar box, coffee and a gentle balsamic lift, all kept in line by bright acidity and tannins that feel silky but still give a firm spine. It spends two years in French and American barrels, then a further three or so in bottle, which smooths everything out, deepens the flavour and leaves you with a Gran Reserva with plenty up its sleeve.
The Occasion
A wine that suits an occasion - roast lamb, game dishes or well-aged beef are natural partners. It's also good enough to drink on its own with a little time to open up in the glass.
The Producer
Founded in 1879, CVNE, or 'Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España', has become a cornerstone of Spanish winemaking. Still based in Haro, where it all began, this family-run winery has maintained its roots while growing into one of Spain’s largest vineyard owners. Known for their exceptional Rioja, they produce under several labels: 'Cune', 'Imperial', 'Viña Real', and 'Contino'. And their wines are a byword for tradition and quality.
