CVNE Viña Real Barrel Fermented Blanco, Rioja 2024
A barrel-fermented Rioja white from CVNE - fresh and fruit-forward, with apple, pear and pastry spice from Hungarian oak and a silky, well-balanced palate.
The Lowdown
Viura isn't a grape that always gets the attention it deserves, but handled well it's capable of real character, and CVNE make a decent case for it here. The grapes come from 20-year-old vines on calcareous clay soils in Rioja Alavesa, hand-harvested and given 12 hours of skin contact before fermentation in Hungarian oak - a thoughtful approach that builds aromatic complexity without losing freshness. Apple, pear and ripe banana sit alongside light pastry spice, with a touch of herbal lift. The lees ageing and batonnage add a quiet creaminess to the mid-palate, but the finish stays clean and fresh.
The Occasion
Good with roast chicken, grilled sea bass or creamy pasta dishes. The oak-derived texture and fresh fruit work well alongside rich but not heavily spiced food.
The Producer
Founded in 1879, CVNE, or 'Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España', has become a cornerstone of Spanish winemaking. Still based in Haro, where it all began, this family-run winery has maintained its roots while growing into one of Spain’s largest vineyard owners. Known for their exceptional Rioja, they produce under several labels: 'Cune', 'Imperial', 'Viña Real', and 'Contino'. And their wines are a byword for tradition and quality.
