CVNE Imperial Reserva, Rioja 2019
One of the most famous Rioja reservas out there - elegant, beautifully balanced, and packed with dark fruit, spice, and a touch of tobacco, with silky tannins and a smooth, satisfying finish.
The Lowdown
This is one of the most recognisable Rioja reservas, and it fully lives up to its reputation. A largely Tempranillo blend, with a dash of Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha for balance, it's a traditional style with all the hallmarks of long oak ageing but with a polished edge. Two years in French and American oak give it lovely vanilla and dark fruit aromas, with rich fruit cake flavours on the palate. Silky, complex, and seriously satisfying, it’s everything you want from a classic reserva.
The Occasion
Perfect with the likes of roast lamb, wild boar stew, or duck casserole - the rich fruit, spice, and silky tannins complement bold, warming dishes beautifully. Strong mature cheeses? They're also a winner.
The Producer
Founded in 1879, CVNE, or 'Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España', has become a cornerstone of Spanish winemaking. Still based in Haro, where it all began, this family-run winery has maintained its roots while growing into one of Spain’s largest vineyard owners. Known for their exceptional Rioja, they produce under several labels: 'Cune', 'Imperial', 'Viña Real', and 'Contino'. And their wines are a byword for tradition and quality.
