Description
France: Southern Rhône
Mellow & Rounded Red
Medium-Full Body - Unoaked
Organic - ABV 14.5% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A cracking introduction to the world of spicy Rhône reds - full of flavour, approachable and great value.
The Lowdown:
An open door into the spicy side of Rhône reds - Grenache bringing ripe dark fruit, Syrah adding peppery lift, with a twist of herbs tying it together. Made by the Estezargues co-operative, it's supple and smooth with tannins that give shape without heaviness. There's that familiar Rhône warmth in the background, but it stays lively and easy to drink. Plenty of spice and warmth, yet still an easy glass to come back to.
The Producer:
Les Vignerons d'Estézargues is a small, innovative co-operative in the town of the same name just to the west of Avignon. While originally established in 1965, things changed dramatically in the 1990s when they started moving to more sustainable and organic methods. With only a few members, all of whom embrace this approach, this is one of the things that sets them apart from many other coops. Additionally, their focus on natural winemaking means using minimal additives, especially sulphur and no commercial yeasts. And because of this their range of traditional southern Rhône wines are true expressions of the local terroir.
When to Drink:
Great with lamb chops, sausages or a rustic bean stew, where the peppery spice cuts through the richness. Also works with charcuterie, and light enough to enjoy slightly chilled on warmer days.
