Description
In a Nutshell:
Classic Christmas styles - Claret, Burgundy, Chateauneuf, Rioja, Chablis - re-imagined from new places and all for under £100 a case.
The Lowdown:
This month's Curious Case takes a quick look at the Christmas classics, then quietly goes elsewhere. Not for novelty's sake, but because there's plenty of good winemaking beyond the usual boundaries. South Africa steps in for Claret with a proper Bordeaux blend that's all shape and polish without the sense of ceremony. A cool-climate Pinot Noir from Western Australia proves Burgundy doesn't have a monopoly on finesse. For the rich, spicy red we've wandered west of the Rhone to the Languedoc, where the flavour and warmth are intact but the pricing's still civilised. Ribera del Duero handles the Rioja brief with the same soft oak and warmth, just a touch more backbone. Then two Chardonnays to finish: one Spanish, rounded and gently oaked, filling the white-Burgundy role; the other English, crisp and chalk-soiled - proof that still wine here can now give Chablis a polite run for its money.
