Description
In a nutshell:
Malbec and Cabernet Franc - a little-seen pairing that just works just fine, from South Africa's coastal vineyards.
The lowdown:
This isn't a blend you see every day - Cabernet Franc and Malbec might seem unlikely partners, but here they're certainly pulling in the same direction. The Cabernet Franc brings its fresh, leafy edge; Malbec adds depth, colour and dark fruit. Fermented in open tanks and aged in seasoned oak for a year, it's got plenty of flavour without being overbearing. Black cherry, mulberry and gentle spice lead the way, backed by supple structure and a savoury touch. A smart, characterful red that makes its own rules and gets it right.
The Producer:
Wildeberg Wines, nestled in South Africa's Franschhoek valley, thrive under the watchful eye of winemaker JD Rossouw. Here they craft their wines from both local vineyards and those further afield. As part of South Africas Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) system, their practices are environmentally friendly, and their participation in the Cape's Old Vine Project highlights their commitment to preserving vines over 35 years old. JD also experiments with lesser-known varieties and cutting-edge techniques, showcased under their SKU (Strange Companjie Unlimited) label. They're good for a fresh and innovative take on things.
When to drink:
Spot on with grilled lamb, smoky veg, or a rich mushroom pie. Bold enough for barbecues, cosy enough for midweek roasts - a proper all-rounder when the food's got depth.
Suitable for Vegans
