Description
In a nutshell:
An engaging blend of Muscat and Xarel-Lo from Penedes in the heart of Catalonia.
The lowdown:
Josep Mitjans is the man behind the Loxarel label, which is based at his Masia Can Mayol bodega situated in the heart of the Penedes region. Here, where they farm organically, they make a wide of wines of which this, Cora de Loxarel is one the their most popular. From their vineyards in the Alt Penedes at an altitude of 500m he makes use of local variety Xarel-lo which blends wonderfully well with Muscat to make a really attractively scented wine which is also nicely rounded and has a good depth and balance. Subtly aromatic and perfumed, it's pleasingly light in the mouth with a raft of exotic fruit flavours which lead up to a refreshingly dry and mineral finish.
The Producer:
The Loxarel vineyards, owned by Josep Mitjan and his family, have been organic and biodynamic for years. Half of their vines are around their 14th-century main house near Vilafranca, while the other half are up a steep track what at 800 metres elevation, feels like a different world. The winery is basic, focusing on the essentials without modern technology or fancy architecture. Interestingly, you'll find a few amphorae in their small barrel cellar, showcasing the Mitjan family's commitment to experimenting and creating natural wines.
When to drink:
It makes for a refreshing aperitif and is a great foil to salty snacks and nibbles.
Suitable for Vegans, Organic
