Description
Rich & Rounded White
Dry, Medium-Full Body, Lightly Oaked
Rhône, ABV 13.5%, 75cl
In a Nutshell:
Benchmark Viognier from one of Condrieu's leading names.
The Lowdown:
Condrieu is Viognier's spiritual home, and the reference point for the grape at its most expressive. This example comes from one of the masters - Michel Chapoutier - and is textbook stuff: opulent stone fruit, honeysuckle, and citrus zest wrapped in gentle spice and a supple, creamy texture. A short spell in oak adds roundness without losing freshness. Everything's in balance here - aromatic but not blowsy, rich but still precise. The fruit is all hand-picked from granite soils above the Rhône, and the winemaking is careful, not flashy. A polished, characterful white with unmistakable pedigree, and a good way to get to know what Condrieu is really all about.
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to Drink:
A natural match for roast guinea fowl, lobster or creamy tagliatelle - dishes with enough weight to echo its richness.
